MARIETTA — It’s been nearly two years since Tamri Barnes passed away following a lengthy battle with ovarian cancer. The legacy she left with her students and fellow teachers at Marietta Elementary lives on, though, and is being remembered in a new outdoor classroom at the school. Friends, family members, former students and benefactors gathered for a ceremony Monday afternoon to dedicate the new facility in the middle of campus.

RED BAY | Whippoorwill Drive, Mockingbird Lane, and, to a slightly lesser degree, Hummingbird Lane – the three streets in Brookwood Subdivision – have been in bad shape for a while. The roadways are badly wallowed out in places, and, in at least one spot, half a lane is blocked off by cones as the asphalt has just crumbled and washed out, potholed by traffic – and revealing the problem for all to see: There is no roadbed; just asphalt on dirt.

Congressman Robert Aderholt made a quick stop in Red Bay on Tuesday morning, August 29th, to visit with leadership at Tiffin Motorhomes and some of Red Bay’s and Franklin County’s leaders. Aderholt said he was impressed with the work and production of Tiffin Motorhomes and was pleased to see the company has been pivoting to create new vehicle lines to meet customer demand and adjust to changes in the recreational vehicle industry.

SALTILLO | Volunteers have been busy sorting and arranging a wide variety of clothing items a Saltillo Community Center the past few weeks, gearing up for Saturday’s annual giveaway. The annual event, sponsored by First Baptist Church of Saltillo, will take place Saturday, Sept. 2, at the community center, from 8 to 11 a.m. Organizer Cindy Buzan urged those needing clothing to get there early. “All of the clothing is on a first-come, first-served basis,” Buzan said.

BALDWYN | Tuesday’s primary election winnowed down the playing field greatly for the general election, but a few local races will be headed to a runoff before the November ballot is squared away – or some races are decided completely as there is no challenger. Still contested are several supervisory races in both Lee and Prentiss counties. In Lee County’s First District supervisor race, newcomers Dan Gale and George Rutledge will face off at the polls on August 29.
