It was a record setting day for Big River’s Josh Christiansen at the North Central District Track Meet in Prince Albert last week. Christiansen finished first in the Junior Boys Discus with a throw of 40.61 metres, finishing over 12 metres ahead of his closest challenger Cash Pilon from St. Louis. Christiansen’s throw set a new district record breaking Richard Skopyk’s record of 40.57 metres which dated back to 1979.

I realize this is the oldest cliche in the book, but time really does fly when you are having fun. After nearly three years, my time on the sports desk here with the Prince Albert Daily Herald has come to a close and I will be moving back to my hometown of Lethbridge, Alta. to begin a new position later this month. Prior to moving to PA, I had never lived outside of Lethbridge and I was completely jumping into the unknown.

It wasn’t quite the finish that the Prince Albert U13 Aces had hoped for, but it was still a very successful weekend at the Shaye Amundson Memorial Tournament. The Aces held a 7-4 lead heading into the bottom half of the seven inning, but couldn’t hold on as the Melfort Spirit would rally to score four times to win the game in walk off fashion. U13 Aces head coach Amy Fiddler was proud of her team’s effort, despite falling short in the end. “The girls played really really well.” Fiddler said.

Pandora’s box was officially opened back in November when it was announced that CHL players would be eligible to play in the NCAA for the 2025-26 season. For many years, players on the CHL path were barred from playing the top level of college hockey south of the border due to the NCAA viewing the CHL’s three member leagues as professional. After the rule change back in November, players across the WHL started to commit to playing in the NCAA following the completion of their WHL eligibility.

It wasn’t the easiest path to victory, but the Prince Albert U15 Aces will definitely take it. The Aces began the Shaye Amundson tournament with an five inning 8-7 victory over the Saskatoon Raiders at Kinsmen Field on Friday afternoon. Head coach Derek Mitchell says it was a test of attrition for Prince Albert throughout the afternoon. “For our girls here today, they really battled the elements as much as the other team too.

Sammy will get to 130.... right?

Abbotsford #Canucks Sammy Blais has 69 penalty minutes so far in the Calder Cup Playoffs. That is the most since 2008 when Kris Newbury recorded 73. The record is Dave Logan, who had 129 in 18 games during the 1981 playoffs.
