A month before Colorado Gov. Jared Polis vetoed a bill that would have given journalists a leg up over normal people when it comes to getting public records, the local NBC station in Colorado Springs laid off journalists, continuing a trend in local TV, as news audiences slide away or die. The previous month, Colorado Community Media, which owns two dozen newspapers around Denver, closed two outlets, and its future looks super shaky, with layoffs and tumult, after a promising start in 2021.

State Sen. Barb Kirkmeyer (R-Weld County) is touting herself to fellow conservatives as Colorado’s bulwark against attacks on Medicaid by Democrats, taking credit recently for adding funds for Colorado’s Medicaid program above what Gov. Jared Polis (D-CO) proposed. Yet, Medicaid is the part of the federal budget that Kirkmeyer believes should be ground zero for budget cuts at the federal level.
