    Four people were shot leaving one dead in Columbia’s downtown Elmwood Park neighborhood early Friday morning. Three others were injured and taken to the hospital. The Columbia Police Department received a call for shots fired at 5:15 a.m. at 2408 Lincoln Street in the historic neighborhood just north of downtown. Two females and one male were injured, one male was killed, according to police. Calls for police assistance first came in for reports of a car break-in.

    Four people were shot leaving one dead in a house in Columbia’s downtown Elmwood Park neighborhood early Friday morning. Three others were wounded and taken to the hospital. No motive for the shooting has been made public. No arrest had been made by late Friday afternoon, but police said there may be “more than one” suspect at large. Police characterized those who were shot as “young adults” and said more information will be made public when it can.

    Information is still coming out about the fatal bus crash involving a Lexington 2 school bus in Chester County on Thursday. One person, 13-year-old student Jose Maria Gonzales Linares, was killed and 21 people were transported to hospitals after a tire blew out on the 2021 Blue Bird school bus carrying students from Pine Ridge Middle School home from a field trip to the Charlotte area. The bus overturned on Interstate 77 and closed traffic in both directions for a time Thursday afternoon.

    Just after 6:05 p.m. inside of the Broad River Correctional Institution in Columbia, the silence of the state’s death chamber was broken by the crack of three unseen rifles and blood spurted from the chest of Brad Sigmon. He is the first person in South Carolina to have been executed by firing squad and only the fourth in the entire country to have been executed by firing squad since the U.S. Supreme Court allowed executions to resume in 1976.

    Both the principal and a teacher at a charter school in Richland County were arrested Wednesday morning, according to the Irmo Police Department. Both 33-year-old Columbia resident Sulaymaan Benoit and 41-year-old Sumter resident Tina Shaw worked at Green Charter School of the Midlands where students were victims of sex crimes, police said in a news release.
