The Fellowship of Christian Athletes of Southeast Mississippi hosted its 13th annual “Breakfast of Champions” Friday morning. Athletes and coaches were honored for their character, on and off the field. “It was a great message,” Petal High School junior Jy Moore said.

(WDAM) - If you were riding along U.S. 98 Friday morning, you likely saw a line of men in red shirts walking. “We started at Chick-fil-A and came all the way out here, almost seven miles,” Crosspoint Community Church Pastor Dean Register said. Through busy traffic, the men carried a cross, as well as a message for Good Friday. “He carried the cross for us, and we’re carrying the cross for Him,” New Seasons Family Worship Center Pastor Clemon Ector said.

CAMP SHELBY, Miss. (WDAM) - After spending their first two years of life at Camp Shelby’s Nature Conservancy, 20 gopher tortoises stepped into the wild for the first time Thursday. “They are federally protected by the fish and wildlife service and in the state of Mississippi,” wildlife biologist Sidney Godfrey said. “Part of that is because the population has been declining over the last couple of decades.”Godfrey led the release and has had a hand in raising the tortoises over the past two years.

PERRY COUNTY, Miss. (WDAM) - Several inmates at the Perry County jail made the first steps toward turning over a new leaf in life. Twelve inmates were baptized Friday at the jail. Inmates received baptism through the First Pentecostal Church’s “jail ministry” program. “I know a couple of them personally that I’ve been talking with,” Sheriff Jacob Garner said.

Earlier this month, state lawmakers passed HB 1193 and SB 2515. The bills follow executive orders signed by President Donald Trump banning DEI in the federal government.
