WAYNESBORO, Miss. (WDAM) - Cynthia Odom has been a nurse midwife at Wayne General Hospital since 1995. In Mississippi, that’s a rare title to hold. “We have deserts all over the place, and midwifery is a valuable option,” Odom said. The state hasn’t had a midwife certification program since the 1970s. Odom told WDAM 7 she was certified in Kentucky. “I pursued the certification in midwifery, and at that time it was Frontier School of Midwifery And Family Nursing,” said Odom.

HATTIESBURG, Miss. (WDAM) - A new program at the University of Southern Mississippi aims to make it one step easier for military personnel transitioning into the civilian workforce. The university recently partnered with the Department of Defense to bring the “Skills Bridge” program to its Hattiesburg and Gulf Coast campuses. Cody Abadie is the assistant director of veterans and military affairs at the Hattiesburg campus.

PETAL, Miss. (WDAM) - Leaders in the City of Petal have started the process of beautifying the area surrounding the old Leaf River pedestrian bridge. Crews were out Monday doing landscaping work on Petal’s end of the bridge. Petal Mayor Tony Ducker told WDAM 7 the project will cost around $35,000. The city is in a partnership with City of Hattiesburg and Forrest County to do a makeover on the old bridge.

BEAUMONT, Miss. (WDAM) - The Town of Beaumont could have a new mayor after Tuesday’s municipal election. This year, five names are on the ballot, all of whom are running Independent. “We didn’t come in here with a red carpet,” incumbent Scotty Dailey said. “We came in here and had to work. “Since being here, that’s something that we’re still doing: trying to work and make it be what is should be.”Dailey said he was hoping for another term after being elected in 2021.

HATTIESBURG, Miss. (WDAM) - Medical students at William Carey University are one month closer to stepping into a new facility dedicated to rural and primary care. Crews broke ground on the 60,000-square-foot facility in December 2023. The building is mostly finished and is expected to open by the fall semester. Students will have access to state-of-the-art simulation labs geared toward osteopathic medicine.
