Canadian wood pellet mills have illegally polluted rivers and lakes, destroyed wetlands, and breached emissions limits, while exporting biomass fuel to countries including the UK and Japan. An investigation by Land and Climate Review, as reported by BBC Newsnight, has found years of repeated lawbreaking at facilities that export wood to burn in the UK’s largest power station, Drax.

A prestigious Oxford University scholarship programme has been accused of celebrating its colonial history. The Rhodes Trust, founded by imperialist Cecil Rhodes, held a talk on the Atlantic Slave Trade following a £38m renovation of Rhodes House. Speakers at the event, held on 12 October, criticised the "difficult" and "uncomfortable" experience. Trust chief executive Dr Elizabeth Kiss said it was committed to becoming "ever-more inclusive and diverse".

John Mason School, in Abingdon, Oxfordshire, will reopen on Monday after partially closing for two weeks. Headteacher Alastair West thanked parents and students for their "patience and support".

Home Secretary Suella Braverman has defended the government's handling of an accommodation barge that has been empty for more than a month. The Bibby Stockholm, docked at Portland Port in Dorset, was evacuated of its first 39 residents after Legionella bacteria was found in the water supply. Ms Braverman said "various procedures" needed to be completed before they could return to the vessel. But she said the government had done "really well" in its work on the barge.
