LAFAYETTE, La. (KADN) — The rise in mental health cases continue in Acadiana and the Lafayette Police Department is working to better address the rise in mental health calls officers receive. LPD is changing its approach to policing the mentally ill. The department is about to roll out its new Lafayette Cares unit. The officers are trained specifically to handle calls that involve individuals suffering from mental illness. It's a first of its kind within the department.
