North Carolina State University is set to name its 15th chancellor Tuesday. The University of North Carolina Board of Governors is meeting Tuesday morning to discuss and elect the chancellor. Fourteen chancellors have led the university since it was founded in 1887. The university's most recent chancellor, Dr. Randy Woodson, has been in the position since April 2010. NCSU, located in Raleigh, is the largest university in North Carolina with nearly 38,000 students.

Health officials in Mecklenburg County are urging parents to make sure their children are up to date on the Measles, Mumps, and Rubella (MMR) vaccine as measles outbreaks have recently been reported in other parts of the United States. More than 250 cases of measles have been reported in Texas and New Mexico, including two deaths in unvaccinated people. Measles is caused by a highly contagious virus that's airborne and spreads easily when an infected person breathes, sneezes or coughs.

North Carolina Gov. Josh Stein is requesting an additional $19 billion in federal assistance for Hurricane Helene recovery efforts. North Carolina is facing more than $60 billion in damage from the storm, the governor said. Helene moved through western North Carolina on Sept. 27, bringing landslides and flooding that swept away homes and businesses. More than 100 people died.

A bird in Hendersonville, N.C., tested positive for bird flu after several birds were found dead at Osceloa Lake last week, health officials said Tuesday. One of five dead birds found along a privately-owned lake was tested for bird flu, and the test came back positive, according to the Henderson County Department of Public Health. It comes as bird flu cases are rising across the nation, causing egg prices to soar.

Of the 67 killed when an American Airlines jet collided midair with an Army helicopter Wednesday night, four crew members were based in Charlotte and one passenger lived in the Queen City, Spectrum News 1 confirmed. A donated vase of red roses honors victims of the deadly collision between a passenger airliner and an Army helicopter that occurred the day prior, Thursday, Jan. 30, 2025, at the Law Enforcement Memorial in Wichita, Kan., where the airline passenger flight originated.
