In 2024 ABC Newcastle decided to bring back a listener- driven radio play. The brief was simple, "we can't perform it until you write it," said Paul Turton, presenter of the ABC statewide morning show. The call went out, and listeners from across the state sent in their name suggestions for the fictional town, and more incredibly, character names and back stories.

It was a routine military training exercise that quickly took a turn for the worse. In the early hours of March 8, 1954, a convoy of 20 amphibious vehicles —tanks that are viable on land and water — embarked on the 15th Northern Rivers Lancers annual camp. Departing from Shortland Army camp, in the New South Wales city of Newcastle, the convoy was en route for a landing exercise 30 kilometres north at Morna Point.

The CSIRO released a report last year that found 740 thousand kilometres of fishing line; enough to circle the earth 18 times is lost at sea each year. Incredible figures and hard to fathom until you see the damage right before your eyes. Earlier this week a dolphin washed up at Nobby's Beach caught up in fishing line. As Jennifer Ingall reports this story has a happy ending thanks to the quick action of council staff and onlookers.

Next year the history and culture of Aboriginal and Torres State Islander people will be taught more comprehensibly in schools. The new syllabus, released by the NSW Education Standards Authority earlier this month for comment will include the Indigenous experience of colonisation. One Hunter school is getting ready for the transition already. Jennifer Ingall reports Morisset High school is already elevating the understanding of indigenous culture though language classes.

The University of Newcastle attracts thousands of international students each year, and the call has gone out for help with accommodation. The Australian Homestay Network pairs students with local families and it is looking for more hosts. Newcastle's Joan Hawkins answered the call and has opened her home for twelve months to Yuki Ota, a student from Japan.
