Edlynne “Eddy” Paez, a Grade 12 student from Niverville, recently returned from two different summits on the topic of nuclear peace, starting with one in Winnipeg, and then a second in Ottawa. Last November, Paez attended the Youth Nuclear Peace Summit, an annual two- to three-day event held at the Canadian Museum of Human Rights in Winnipeg.

Back in 1968, Shur-Gro Farm Services began in Brandon, Manitoba. Forty years later, in 2008, the future Niverville and Dugald branches of Shur-Gro started life as their own company, called South East Seeds, started by Jeromy Rempel. They began by selling corn, soybeans, and sunflowers.

Baudry Trail, groomed for cross-country skiing. On January 11, Ritchot Recreation and the Canadian Parks and Wilderness Society (CPAWS) partnered up to host a cross-country skiing event at the Baudry Trail in Ste. Agathe. Approximately 20 members of the CPAWS Nature Club participated in the ski-up, which included free ski rentals. CPAWS staff and volunteers led two separate groups and helped the participants along the trail.

Each season, Niverville Recreation & Wellness creates a comprehensive leisure guide outlining the programs, events, and classes that will be available for the coming season. The winter guide is out now and highlights both old favourites and fun new activities. On December 8, the CRRC will host their Community Christmas. From 9:30 a.m. until 1:00 p.m., you can take a photo with Santa—just be sure to bring your own camera.

Paul Lavin becoming a citizen of Canada. Earlier this month I had the privilege of witnessing my husband Paul become a Canadian citizen. During the ceremony, we were shown a video called “Welcome, There Is Room”—and I was struck by the power of those words and the weight of history behind them. The story of Canada begins between 10,000 and 12,000 years ago as the last Ice Age wound down and sea levels shifted.
