One of San Diego’s flagship shopping destinations is stepping into the next generation of retail with plans to remake an anchor space into an upscale apartment community. Simon Property Group announced earlier this week that it will redo the west end of Fashion Valley Mall with 850 luxury residential units, 100,000 square feet of new shops and eateries, and an open-air plaza. The development will replace the JCPenney store and adjacent surface parking areas.

Four months after the negotiated exit of its CEO, the Port of San Diego is officially on the hunt for its next administrative leader. The agency began publicly advertising for the president and chief executive officer position on Friday. The job posting says the port is seeking a “diplomat” and “expert facilitator” who can lead a large staff, work alongside hundreds of waterfront tenants, report to a seven-member board and address the needs of its five member cities.

Eager to exit its failing downtown operations building, the city of San Diego has agreed to lease the entirety of an empty office building in Mission Valley and will move a portion of its development services department to the facility later this year. Monday, San Diego City Councilmembers voted 8 to 1 to sublease the building at 7650 Mission Valley Road from Wawanesa General Insurance Company Inc. for a term of four years and four months, ending September 2028.

The government agency that controls San Diego’s industrial waterfront is seeking to be a better neighbor to people who live just east of its marine terminals and shipyards. Tuesday, the Board of Port Commissioners for the San Diego Unified Port District voted unanimously to double its annual contribution to what’s known as the Maritime Industrial Impact Fund and expand the fund’s purpose to include electrification projects.
