Neighbours appalled at sewage discharges in part of Kent have called a public meeting with Southern Water over the “crisis”. They have used Environment Agency data to establish untreated waste was discharged for a total of more than 6,000 hours in 2023, at seven sites which either feed the River Eden or its tributaries. This total was discussed at a recent public meeting of the New Edenbridge and District Residents’ Association (NEDRA) and was met with “shock”, the group said.

A primary's plans to build a 3G pitch on its school field has been thrown out. Planners had recommended Shawley Community Primary School in Epsom Downs be allowed to build the artificial grass pitch, with fencing and floodlighting, but councillors rejected it. It came after a resident, who said he represented 120 neighbours, raised concerns about the extra noise and disruption extended use of the pitch after school and at weekends would cause to those living nearby.

The first MP for Dorking and Horley has used his maiden speech in Parliament to highlight the “crisis” in SEND provision in Surrey. Rising to his feet, during a debate on technology in public services, in an emotional speech Chris Coghlan told the House he was “hugely honoured to be the first Liberal MP for Dorking and Horley in over 100 years”.

Plans for 126 homes in blocks up to seven storeys in height next to Dorking railway station have been recommended for approval despite concerns about the impact on a Surrey beauty spot. Mole Valley’s planning committee will have the final say on the Clarion Housing scheme at its meeting on Wednesday, but planning officers say they should vote in favour, subject to some conditions.
