The Minnesota Department of Health has delayed layoffs of as many as 170 workers after discovering errors in job cuts prompted by the sudden loss of more than $220 million in federal grants. Closer inspection found some workers who received lay-off notices were funded by other federal grants and revenue sources, meaning the department wouldn't necessarily fix its budget deficit by eliminating them.

Lydia Fess gets the math. She's a trained epidemiologist, after all, so she understands why the Minnesota Department of Health was forced to make cuts when it lost more than $220 million in federal grants. She just doesn't understand why she and other public health employees like her got the ax, when only a fragment of their salaries were covered by these funds, and the workers are well-trained in the fight to prevent infectious diseases.

The impact of more than $220 million in federal cuts to the Minnesota Department of Health became clearer Tuesday, as the agency issued layoff notices to 170 workers and rescinded offers to another 20 new-hires. Minnesota as a result will encounter slower responses to foodborne and other infectious outbreaks, because the state had to cut lab technicians and public health workers who investigate how diseases spread, said Dr. Brooke Cunningham state health commissioner.
