IRON MOUNTAIN – With their skill, athleticism, doggedness and hunger, the Iron Mountain Mountaineers are certainly going to produce some blowout victories in 2024-25. So far, they’re 2-for-2. The Mountaineers pounced on Manistique right from the opening tip, taking a 20-0 lead just 3 1/2 minutes into the game, and went on to record their second consecutive rout, this one an 82-26 victory over the Emeralds in a West Pac Conference game Monday night at Mountaineer Gym.

IRON MOUNTAIN — The Iron Mountain football team’s matchup with Manistique Friday night in the Division 8 Semifinal No. 113 was an oddity, historically speaking. The UPSSA Division 1-3 third-ranked Mountaineers took the field on a crisp and cold evening at Mountaineer Stadium with the Emeralds as their opponent for the third time in the 2024 campaign. Unofficially, Iron Mountain has never faced the same team three times in one season. While the matchup was unusual, the result was not.

KINGSFORD – Prep football coaches know they likely will be forced to deal with first-game issues relating to mistakes like penalties and missed assignments. The preseason isn’t terribly long and there really aren’t any opportunities for inter-squad scrimmages, so the opening game is usually sloppy, at least to some degree. The first half of Thursday’s opener between Kingsford and Escanaba was untidy to say the least.

KINGSFORD – Well into the seventh hour of the season-starting Kingsford Invitational volleyball tournament on Saturday, the host Flivvers and the Forest Park Lady Trojans stepped onto court at the hot and humid Flivver Gymnasium. The teams had powered their way through their respective brackets without a hiccup, having each won all eight sets they played during the marathon day which featured an expanded 14-team field.

KINGSFORD – With the knowledge that they were scheduled to host the Division 2 District 33 tournament this season, the Kingsford Flivvers were eagerly anticipating Wednesday night. And when the Flivvers finally took the court against the Gladstone Braves in the district semifinal, they were almost ravenous with anticipation and it showed. The Division 1-3 third-ranked Flivvers stormed out to a 21-0 lead in the first seven minutes of the game and never looked back in their 56-30 rout of the Braves.
