    UPPER MICHIGAN, Mich. (WLUC) - School districts across Michigan could soon offer free pre-k for all if the funding is included in the upcoming state budget. Governor Gretchen Whitmer called on lawmakers to include money in the upcoming state budget to provide free pre-k for all. The goal is to remove income requirements for the Great Start Readiness program. The state-funded program currently provides free pre-K for families earning up to 300% of the poverty level.

    ISHPEMING, Mich. (WLUC) - Preschool students at Birchview Elementary are looking for your help to receive valentines from around the nation. Birchview preschool students get to open a couple of valentines a day that are sent from states outside of Michigan. The goal is to receive a valentine from all 50 states. One of the teachers behind the project Chelsea Pekrul says it is a perfect learning tool for the students. “I really like how excited they get when they get the mail,” Pekrul said.

    MARQUETTE, Mich. (WLUC) - Student, alumni, or U.P. residents have the chance to make their mark in Northern Michigan University history. The university is looking for submissions of an original alma mater composition. The winner’s piece will appear in a celebration in recognition of the university’s 125th anniversary. First place will also get a $2,000 cash prize, with cash prizes for second and third place as well.

    GOGEBIC COUNTY, Mich. (WLUC) - There is an effort to get a $50 million state grant to support the construction of a copper mine. The Highland Copper Company is looking to build a mine in Gogebic County. The Copperwood Mine would be in Wakefield and Ironwood Townships. It attempted to secure $50 million in grant funding from the Michigan Strategic Fund at a meeting this morning. If approved, it would need additional support from the House and Senate Appropriations committees.

Governor Whitmer is aiming to make free education possible if state lawmakers reach a deal to include it in the 2024 budget. Gogebic Community College President Chris Patritto says providing associate degrees and skills credentials will help U.P. businesses.
