NORTH WILKESBORO - MerleFest was a brilliant way for "Doc" Watson to pay tribute to his late son, Merle Watson, who died in a tractor accident at the age of 36 while working on his farm in Lenoir in 1985. The first MerleFest was held in 1988, and the immensely popular 4-day event is a fundraiser for Wilkes Community College, which will host it again starting on Thursday, April 24. Doc Watson and Merle Watson, both from Deep Gap, combined to win 11 GRAMMY Awards during their lifetimes.

BLOWING ROCK - "A Cardboard History of Blue Ridge Music," an exhibit being presented at the Blowing Rock Art & History Museum (BRAHM) that started on March 1, will conclude on Saturday, April 26. The exhibition is being held in the Museum's Alexander Community Gallery, and gives an in-depth look at the history of Blue Ridge music; it includes 36 letterpress-style posters dating back to 1939. The posters are from the private collection of Tom Murphy.

BOONE - "She Kills Monsters," by Qui Nguyen, will be performed at the Valborg Theatre on Thursday, April 24 starting at 7 p.m.; it will be also be performed Friday, April 25 (7 p.m.), Saturday, April 26 (2 p.m., 7 p.m.) and Sunday, April 27 (2 p.m.). Tickets can be purchased through App State's Department of Dance (theatreanddance.appstate.edu/news/she-kills-monsters), and are $17 for adults, $15 for faculty and staff, and $10 for students.

By JERRY SNOW WEST JEFFERSON - The Appalachian Tunes (AT) program will begin an 8-week semester on April 29 that will run through June 17 at the Ashe Civic Center (962 Mt. Jefferson Rd.). The small group music lessons will be held weekly on Tuesdays. The program is open to ages 13 and up, and focuses on traditional, old time, bluegrass instruments - the fiddle, clawhammer banjo, guitar and mandolin.
