Twenty-six wild horses found new homes during the Bureau of Land Management’s Wild Horse and Burro adoption event in Hamilton May 2-4. Of the 26 horses placed into new homes, 19 were adults and seven yearlings. With a 72% placement rate into private care, “the event demonstrated the public’s continued interest in adopting and caring for America’s iconic wild horses,” according to a BLM statement released Thursday.

Fire season is off to an early start in the Bitterroot Valley this year after a wildfire was identified in the Big Creek area 9.5 miles west of Stevensville on Wednesday, May 7 by the Bitterroot National Forest (BNF). Fire managers conducted a reconnaissance flight on Thursday morning. An initial report identified the fire at 1 acre but after aerial reconnaissance and ground confirmation the fire is now estimated at 75 acres according to BNF.

Researchers in the Bitterroot Valley have seen significant mortality in bighorn sheep over the winter, with all collared rams in the Skalkaho herd reported to have died. The news comes just weeks after a bighorn sheep die-off in northeastern Montana prompted a hunting closure in Hunting District 622, north of Fort Peck Reservoir.

Two dozen Rocky Mountain Laboratories (RML) employees lost their jobs on Tuesday, April 1 as part of the most recent round of federal layoffs impacting employees at the National Institutes of Health. The National Institutes of Health is expected to layoff about 1,200 people nationwide as part of an effort announced Tuesday to reduce the Department of Health and Human Services by thousands of workers.
