The non-profit aims to build not just homes, but a community for foster children and parents to live at. “That just really touched my heart, so I knew I had to get involved someway somehow, I cannot foster myself, but I thought, how can I help,” says Shaw. The price tag for land and a home for the ranch is $600,000 to $1 million.

HOUSTON COUNTY, Ala. (WDHN)—A Geneva County man accused of making terrorist threats toward investigators was denied bond in Houston County on Thursday. Victor Newman, 39 of Chancellor made his first appearance in court for a bond hearing. Newman was arrested on February 25, 2025, and charged with making terrorist threats. This comes after an alleged incident on February 19, when officers say he threatened to cause harm to someone or something.

HOUSTON COUNTY, Ala. (WDHN)—A major motor vehicle crash in Houston County on Friday night closed lanes of traffic and prompted an investigation by ALEA. Multiple crews from around the county rushed to the scene of a vehicle on fire and a case of entrapment in the 14900 block of Highway 52 at July Road, west of Columbia. According to Rickey Stokes News, one patient was taken to the hospital by Columbia Rescue.

The West Island Black Community Association (WIBCA) held its annual “Tropical Nights” gala on September 21st in Dollard-des-Ormeaux. The event celebrated the community’s achievements and raised funds for future generations. The evening featured live Caribbean-inspired entertainment, including steel pan music and dance performances. Attendees enjoyed a Caribbean-themed dinner and the gala’s festive atmosphere.

Dr. Alwin SpenceMrs. Ruby Smith was one of four Black teachers at a rural school in New Jersey. The school had a staff of eighteen teachers and one principal. Of the eighteen teachers, Mrs. Smith and three others were Black. Mrs. Smith was one of the grade five teachers. She was well loved by her students. Parents also admired her, and often requested that their children be placed in her class. She was also from the community and was the only teacher with a master’s degree in education.
