BEAUFORT COUNTY, S.C. (WTOC) - We have an update on a major project in the Lowcountry. The South Carolina State Infrastructure Bank voted to award $120 million of funding to improve U.S. 278 bridges. This comes after the bank previously denied the request. They said there were several issues with the contract, intergovernmental agreement between the parties. Beaufort County leaders were then granted a few months to renegotiate their contract with the bank. Now, it has been approved.

HAMPTON COUNTY, S.C. (WTOC) —Watermelon is the talk of the town in Hampton County, as the 83rd Watermelon Festival, the oldest festival in South Carolina. The festival officially started on Saturday, June 14, and will wrap on Saturday, June 21. Organizers tell WTOC that since Saturday, they have seen a record number of people enter events throughout the week and attend. This year’s festival also welcomed a carnival back to Hampton County.

HARDEEVILLE, S.C. (WTOC) - New shops, restaurants, homes, and an apartment complex are coming to the City of Hardeeville. These new buildings will be located off of Exit 8 on Interstate 95 on over 300-acres of land behind the hospital. The developer of what’s known as the Southpoint project says that this has been 10 years in the making. The goal is to create a premiere shopping and dining center for people in the Lowcountry.

SAVANNAH, Ga. (WTOC) - A Savannah Airman has received one of the most prestigious awards that the Federal Aviation Administration can give out. For several years, 94-year-old Charles “Bud” Nosil walked the hallways of the National Museum of the Mighty Eighth Air giving tours, but on Thursday night in the same place he was honored with the Wright Brothers Master Pilot Award. “I wasn’t really aware that I was going to be nominated for this,” Nosil said.

The $225 million project will be a 444-room hotel that will be located near the convention center, which just finished an expansion two months ago.
