Domestic violence counsellor and social worker Leanne Duggan has always navigated life independently with her guide dog Esther by her side. But her world changed when she was diagnosed with advanced pancreatic cancer in May last year. "It was hard, it was shattering," she said. She had three months of chemotherapy before undergoing extensive surgery in September to remove the tumour, part of her pancreas, spleen, small intestine, an adrenal gland and 36 lymph nodes, of which six were cancerous.

Three Sydney men have been handed lengthy prison sentences for the "degrading and heinous" gang rape of three young women during a bucks weekend in Newcastle in 2022. Maurice Hawell, 30, Andrew David, 30 and Marius Hawell, 22, were convicted by a jury on multiple counts of aggravated sexual assault in company, aggravated sexual touching in company and attempting to commit sexual assault in company in July.

The licence of Sydney's The Star will remain suspended and the casino has been hit with a $15 million fine amid ongoing compliance failures. The NSW Independent Casino Commission (NICC) has imposed a range of conditions on The Star and will re-assess its suitability to regain its casino licence by March 31 next year. Two inquiries into the casino, known as the Bell Inquiries, identified serious misconduct and failures of compliance and governance.

Around 60 people people gathered at a vigil in Sydney Harbour on the anniversary of the October 7 Hamas terrorist attack. A giant candle sand sculpture was lit and prayers were sung to remember those who were killed and taken hostage. The vigil is the first of many being held around the country today. A year on from the October 7 Hamas terrorist attack, the pain and trauma is still raw for Australia's Jewish community.

Extended emergency department wait times and delays to elective surgeries are expected in NSW today as nurses and midwives walk off the job to rally for a larger pay rise. Thousands of nurses and midwives brandishing signs and chanting "we want 15 per cent" have marched from Sydney's Hyde Park to Parliament House. Part of the city's CBD has been closed and mounted police are patrolling the streets.
