A four-month investigation into the discovery of "forever chemicals" in a New South Wales river has identified a composting facility as a major contamination source. The NSW Environment Protection Authority (EPA) began an extensive testing program of the Belubula River in the state's central west after PFAS, or per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances, were detected last year.

It cost $232 million and covers 2.4 kilometres, but the newest stretch of the Great Western Highway in New South Wales has been branded a road "to nowhere". Motorists can now travel on a dual-lane carriageway that bypasses the village of Little Hartley, east of Lithgow. After that traffic merges back onto the old route, which offers one lane each way. Three children allegedly walked free from a childcare centre while assumed to be under supervision. The facility reported itself to the NSW Education Department blaming loose gate latches that were blown open in the wind. A childcare centre in central west NSW is under investigation after three minors allegedly escaped from the premises and were spotted near a road by a passer-by.
