Rhode Island’s legislature closed just after 1:30 a.m. Saturday, and the House failed to take up a bill that would have opened the sports wagering market from a single operator to five. An amended version of SB 748 passed the Senate on June 4, 30-2, but never got a committee hearing in the House. The bill was reported to have been important to the late Senate President Dominick Ruggerio, which Senate Majority Leader Frank Ciccone acknowledged as the bill moved through the Senate.

Writing that allowing Kalshi and other prediction markets to offer sports event contracts that mimic sports betting will “have a significant impact on their or their member tribes’ rights regarding gaming on Indian lands, as well as Indian gaming and tribal governmental revenue as a whole,” a group of more than 65 tribal entities Monday filed an amicus brief in Kalshi’s case against the state of New Jersey.

The company’s annual meeting lasted about 12 minutes and lacked the fireworks some expected, given HG Vora’s public and brash campaign to seat three new members as Penn has argued only two spots were available.

Sports betting operators could see taxes go up in yet another state after Wyoming’s Select Committee on Capital Finances and Investment last Thursday took the first steps toward filing legislation to increase tax rates for digital sports betting and historic horse racing (HHR). So far this year, Maryland lawmakers raised the digital wagering tax there from 15% to 20% effective July 1.

The decision by DraftKings and FanDuel to balance out a new per-wager tax in Illinois with a 50-cents per-wager surcharge of their own could result in a net gain for both companies, Jefferies analysts wrote in a note Friday. Illinois lawmakers pushed through a last-minute first-of-its-kind tax in their budget May 31, but Gov. JB Pritzker has not signed the budget yet.
