The Vicksburg Post

The Vicksburg Post

On May 4, 1883, John Gordon Cashman launched the inaugural edition of the Vicksburg Evening Post from a second-floor office on Washington Street. This venture stemmed from his decision, made without consulting anyone, to start a new newspaper, as he mentioned in a letter to his wife, Fannie, dated March 26, 1883. At that time, he was employed at a morning newspaper but found the exhausting night shifts detrimental to his health and eyesight. He assured Fannie that his new project would be an evening publication, which would involve minimal nighttime work. Cashman chose the name Vicksburg Evening Post to set it apart from the leading morning newspaper of the era. The type for his first editions was painstakingly set by hand from written manuscripts and printed on a manual flatbed press, highlighting a stark contrast to today's digital publishing methods.

Published 12:51 pm Sunday, May 11, 2025 I was so excited this week when I saw the City of Vicksburg had received a massive grant that would go toward the new Riverfront Park. The Mississippi River is one of Vicksburg’s crowning jewels and the park, which is located at the corner of Lee and Oak streets, will certainly showcase this majestic body of water.

She has been a teacher who genuinely loves each one of the students who walk through her classroom door. So-much-so, some have likened her to a mother. “She was so caring and took the time to build a relationship with each student individually. I felt like she was a second mother at school,” Marcus Allen said.

Published 4:45 pm Friday, May 9, 2025 In baseball, as in life, bad bounces happen and send things in an unexpected direction. If you stay with it, though, you can still make the play. It’s a lesson Grant Worsley took to heart. The Vicksburg entrepreneur was trying to bring a college baseball series between Jackson State and Alcorn State to Vicksburg back in March. When the deal fell through, he stayed with it and turned an error into a web gem for Vicksburg’s young players.

Published 2:24 pm Friday, May 9, 2025 Having children exposes you to a lot of new experiences, and anyone who regularly reads my column is no doubt used to hearing about some of the latest adventures Sawyer and Colin Bell expose their old dad to on a pretty regular basis. Well, you can add the girlfriend Eli (Elizabeth) to the list of folks you’ll likely be hearing a good bit about. She too is expanding my horizons on an almost daily basis.
