The Vicksburg Post

The Vicksburg Post

On May 4, 1883, John Gordon Cashman launched the inaugural edition of the Vicksburg Evening Post from a second-floor office on Washington Street. This venture stemmed from his decision, made without consulting anyone, to start a new newspaper, as he mentioned in a letter to his wife, Fannie, dated March 26, 1883. At that time, he was employed at a morning newspaper but found the exhausting night shifts detrimental to his health and eyesight. He assured Fannie that his new project would be an evening publication, which would involve minimal nighttime work. Cashman chose the name Vicksburg Evening Post to set it apart from the leading morning newspaper of the era. The type for his first editions was painstakingly set by hand from written manuscripts and printed on a manual flatbed press, highlighting a stark contrast to today's digital publishing methods.
