PARRISH, Fla. (WWSB) - The Manatee County Sheriff’s Office said Thursday they have found skeletal remains they believe are the remains of an Ellenton man missing since December. Paul Sargent, 87, was last seen Dec. 10, 2024 after leaving his home on 31st Court East. His car was found April 4 by the owners of a farm near the intersection of State Road 62 and Safford Road, between Parrish and Duette, authorities said.

SARASOTA, Fla. (WWSB) - A new report by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration estimates the economic cost of Hurricane Milton at more than $34 billion, almost all of it in Florida. The report also says forecasts as the storm approached could have been better, from predicting the track to estimating the intensity of the storm. Milton was one of the strongest hurricanes of record in the Atlantic basin, reaching Category 5 intensity.

SARASOTA, Fla. (WWSB) - Florida lawmakers are trying once again to make it illegal for drivers to camp out in the left lane of highways. Two identical bills, HB 545 and SB 636, would clarify it is illegal for drivers to use the left lane unless they are actively passing another vehicle or are being compelled to do so by road conditions. The House bill is sponsored by Rep. Jenna Persons-Mulicka, R-Fort Myers.

Several fifth grade students at Robert Willis Elementary School in Lakewood Ranch were honored Feb. 25 for writing winning essays in a contest sponsored by the Manatee County Retired Educators Association. “Any time we can acknowledge kids and what they can accomplish, it is wonderful,” said Barbara Borderieux, the association president. Borderieux and contest chairwoman Kris Williamson were at the school to award certificates, and for the first and second place winners, gift cards for their work.

The Creating the Talent Pipeline luncheon was hosted by the LWRBA, which brought the presidents of five local colleges together at Grove restaurant in Lakewood Ranch.
