Jim WalshCherry Hill Courier-PostFirefighters were still “mopping up hot spots” as of June 17 at a largely contained wildfire in Shamong, the New Jersey Forest Fire Service said. The 6,000-acre blaze, which began the morning of June 13 in Wharton State Forest and has been referred to as the Mines Sprung Wildfire, was 90% contained at noon June 16. Firefighters were patrolling the perimeter of the burn area, the agency said.

A former Vineland man has been sentenced to a 50-year term for sex crimes against a 2-year-old girl. Jorge Deleon Diaz, 54, must serve more than 40 years before parole eligibility, according to the Cumberland County Prosecutor’s Office. In February, members of a Cumberland County jury found Diaz guilty of aggravated sexual assault, sexual assault, lewdness and endangering the welfare of a minor.

The New Jersey Supreme Court ruled that a grand jury can investigate alleged clergy sex abuse and potential cover-ups in Roman Catholic dioceses. The ruling overturns lower court decisions that blocked a grand jury investigation. The Diocese of Camden, which initially challenged the grand jury, has withdrawn its objection and pledged cooperation.

Jim WalshCherry Hill Courier-PostA 20-year-old man has died after a daylight shooting in Millville, authorities said. Roshaud Rhett, a Millville resident, was shot at approximately 11:05 a.m. Saturday in the 300 block of Maurice Street, according to the Cumberland County Prosecutor’s Office. He was pronounced dead at an area hospital. An investigation is ongoing, the prosecutor's office said.
