Evesham's new police chief is a 25-year veteran of the township force with two university degrees. Thomas Reinholt most recently served as the department's deputy chief, as well as acting chief since the retirement of former chief Walt Miller in December. He's to oversee approximately 100 sworn law officers and civilian employees, according to a statement from the township on Monday, June 2.

Two South Jersey men in their 70s have died as a result of separate traffic accidents. Calvin Harrje, 70, of Deptford was pronounced dead at the scene of a May 29 collision in Vineland. His vehicle was struck shortly after 6 p.m. when it allegedly failed to observe a stop sign on Pennsylvania Avenue near Hance Bridge Road, according to Vineland police. The other driver, a 54-year-old Vineland man, was treated at a hospital for injuries that were not life-threatening, police said.

Cherry Hill resident Elvis Harizaj, 25, allegedly cited a sham marriage with an American woman in an application for permanent residence in this country, according to the U.S. Attorney's Office for New Jersey. But the "marriage" to 27-year-old Natasha Flores of Newark didn't survive scrutiny by investigators, said a May 19 criminal complaint.

An inmate has been found guilty of a violent murder inside a state prison in Cumberland County. Bruce Duette, 45, was accused of killing Martin Sanchez one day before the victim was to be released from Bayside State Prison in November 2022. Sanchez, 41, was found unresponsive in his cell. The former Elizabeth resident died from blunt force trauma and compression to his neck, the prosecutor's office said.

The National Weather Service has declared a tornado watch for South Jersey and surrounding areas for much of Friday night. "Storms will begin to impact our area 8 p.m. this evening," the weather agency said Friday. "Remain alert for changing conditions tonight!"The watch was to continue until 12 a.m., May 31. The weather service also declared a flood watch, from 7 p.m. Friday to Saturday morning, in Camden, Gloucester and Salem counties, as well as for northwestern Burlington County.
