    COLUMBIA — The Midlands will be under a heat advisory today from 1 to 8 p.m. as temperatures are expected to climb above 100 degrees. Heat index values will range from 105 to 110 degrees, reaching dangerous levels, according to the National Weather Service's Columbia office.     COLUMBIA — The bullet that grazed a 7-year-old girl at a local soccer complex on June 22 likely came from a makeshift shooting range in a nearby wooded area, according to the soccer complex management. The shooting range, near the Southeastern Freight Lines Soccer Center at 115 Sunbelt Blvd., was "crudely constructed using pallets as targets," South Carolina United FC Executive Director Rob Strickland said in a letter to club families that was shared on Facebook.

    COLUMBIA — Two people who attacked and injured police officers during a 2020 protest over the death of George Floyd have been sentenced to federal prison. Luis Rosario, 29, of Columbia, was sentenced to four years, followed by a two years of supervision. Brandon Jemar Pickett, 38, of Cayce, was sentenced to one year in prison followed by a two years term of supervision.

    COLUMBIA — Susan, a giant Pacific octopus at Riverbanks Zoo & Garden, has died, the zoo announced on June 12. The octopus was named in honor of Susan F. Boyd, whose support through The Boyd Foundation has been instrumental in the zoo's conservation efforts, the zoo said in a Facebook post. "Susan's life serves as a testament to the incredible nature of octopuses, known for their intelligence, adaptability, and relatively short but impactful lives," the post read.

    COLUMBIA — Thousands of people in the Midlands were still without power on June 8 after a line of severe thunderstorms moved through the area late on June 7, knocking down trees and damaging power lines. Downed power lines were reported on Barhamville Road and on Broad River Road at the S.C. Department of Juvenile Justice, according to Columbia police. The severe weather caused several temporary road closures and traffic diversions.
