A third of pubs, bars, restaurants and hotels across the UK are now operating at a loss and facing potential closure, following a wave of tax increases that hit the sector in April. An industry survey conducted by UKHospitality, the British Beer & Pub Association, the British Institute of Innkeeping and Hospitality Ulster, which was carried out last month, revealed that employer costs surged by £3.4bn in just one quarter – the steepest rise the sector has seen in recent years.

Sick and disabled employees need greater health support in the workplace, Sir Charlie Mayfield has commented. Speaking to the Financial Times, the former John Lewis Partnership chair and Keep Britain Working review lead said HR managers will often be told not to contact employees on sick leave because of fears of being accused of bullying and/or facing tribunal claims. “They would do anything to avoid that,” he added.

Around one in 10 (11 per cent) graduates have changed their career directions because of fears AI could eventually make their job obsolete, a survey has revealed. The Prospects at Jisc Early Careers Survey 2025, based on 4,072 respondents, found those who adjusted their plans because of AI were more likely to report feeling negative or very negative about their current career prospects (29 per cent) compared with those who did not alter their plans (17 per cent).
