Georgetown women’s basketball looks to alley-oop off its impressive performance last season. Not only did the Hoyas improve from 14-17 to 19-10 (9-9 in the BIG EAST), but their season culminated with the program’s first appearance in the BIG EAST championship final and a second round appearance in the inaugural Women’s Basketball Invitational Tournament. After the tragic death of coach Tasha Butts, Darnell Haney took over as interim coach for the 2023 campaign.

On Saturday, March 9, the Georgetown women’s basketball team (21-10, 9-9 BIG EAST) upset the St. John’s Red Storm (17-14, 11-7 BIG EAST) to advance to the BIG EAST Tournament semifinals. The Hoyas were led by graduate forward Graceann Bennett, who had 16 points and 7 rebounds. The game opened just about perfectly for the Hoyas, with shots falling nicely and their defense holding St. John’s scoreless in the opening minutes.

The Georgetown Hoyas (8-17, 1-13 BIG EAST) welcomed the Villanova Wildcats (14-11, 7-7 BIG EAST) to the District for some Friday night hoops at Capital One Arena. Unfortunately for first-year head coach Ed Cooley and his Hoyas, their nine-game skid turned to double digits with a dispiriting 70-54 loss to a middling Villanova team stuck in year two of life after the retirement of legendary coach Jay Wright.

“Uh, like brothers?” That was associate head coach Bobby Jones’ response when asked about the relationship between two of his star players Uno Christopher, ’25, and Jacob “Jake” Romero, ’25. “I very much think that Uno thinks he’s the big brother, and Jake thinks he’s the little brother,” Jones said. “I don’t know if they’ll agree with that, but that’s how it comes off to me.”Christopher and Romero are a talented pair.

Many young athletes growing up are asked the question, “What is your main sport?” Washington and Lee University’s Sarah Zimmerman, ’26, still doesn’t have an answer. Zimmerman is an impact player for not one but two teams on campus: basketball and soccer. In her freshman seasons, the Cincinnati native was named third-team all-conference for soccer and then turned around to average 20 minutes a game for the Old Dominion Athletic Conference championship basketball team.
