A big part of the utility company's plan to mitigate wildfires includes strengthening systems, communications, and being aware of the weather and other fire-related risks. Christy Herington says she and her 20-year-old daughter were sitting outside their home in Altadena on January 7 when they first saw the glow of the fire on the horizon. Because of the fierce winds, it didn't take long for them to lose power and receive an evacuation notice.

CORVALLIS, Ore. — The owner of the controversial Coffin Butte Landfill near Corvallis has resubmitted an application to the county after its last one was denied. Republic Services, which owns and operates Coffin Butte Landfill, resubmitted an application with Benton County on Wednesday for a new continual use permit that would let it expand the size of the landfill. The county says it denied the last application because it lacked necessary information about the potential effects of expansion.
