Several court papers concerned the whereabouts of the mayor’s personal cellphone, which agents tried to seize in a dramatic confrontation with Adams — a former police captain — on Nov. 6, 2023. Federal gumshoes approached the mayor as he left an event at New York University in Manhattan and tried to seize his devices, but Adams did not have his personal phone on him and provided conflicting explanations of where it was. He said he left it at City Hall, but location data showed otherwise.

Felony assaults rose by 29 percent, car thefts by 36 percent and robberies by 20 percent from the end of 2021 to the end of last year, according to the most recent year-end NYPD statistics.

The budget — which needs sign off from the City Council before it takes effect July 1 — includes less in savings as a percentage of city spending compared to last year’s executive budget, even as fiscal threats from President Donald Trump loom. And future gaps, budget experts recently warned, are growing to unsustainable levels.
