Ingredion Inc. announced plans to close its plant protein concentrates and flour manufacturing facility in Vanscoy, Saskatchewan, effective January 6. The closure follows a strategic review of the company’s operations. In a filing with the US Securities and Exchange Commission on December 31, Ingredion revealed that it intends to sell the facility and property but has not finalised a sales contract. The Vanscoy plant was acquired by Ingredion in November 2020 through its purchase of Verdient Foods.

Wheat prices in India surged to a record high on January 6 due to a supply shortage, putting pressure on flour mills that are struggling to secure enough grain to operate at full capacity. Industry officials reported that even with the increased prices, mills are unable to meet their demand. The rise in wheat prices is expected to drive up retail inflation, which had eased in November following a spike in October.

Taiwan Agriweek 2023, organised by My Exhibition Co. Ltd. and sponsored by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Taipei City Government Tourism Communications Bureau, proved to be a global gathering of agricultural enthusiasts. This event, held from August 31st to September 2nd at Taipei Nangang Exhibition Centre, Hall 1, brought together attendees and delegates from around the world, serving as a prime channel for entry into Taiwanese, Asia-Pacific, and global markets.

To start there are questions, is the plant cold, shut down for the weekend, or simply stopped to change to a new product? Was the system cleaned or what was the last product made? There are different approaches based on the above questions. If it’s a cold clean plant, then it is different than if simply changing die with a warm system, which starts easier. Even moistures to the dryer over time allow for even moistures out of the dryer assuming the dryer is designed for a low moisture variation. If the moisture to the dryer, with a normal 20-minute retention time, varies it will most likely vary upon exiting the dryer. In fact, special attention to dryers was needed to take a very even moisture product into the dryer and make it exit evenly.

Two topics in this issue which spark my interest is the waste processing and pet treats. Starting with the waste processing, there are many ways to process waste. Animal and marine matter into a usable ingredient. Many are simply dried such as meat and bone meals or fishmeals. Obviously, these can be the whole animal or waste portions being processed. How they are dried can be useful information.
