This Sunday, June 15, the annual Blessing of the Fleet will be held at 5:30 p.m. at the Barnegat Light Yacht Basin in Barnegat Light. “It’s dedicated to all who have lost their lives and to those who daily risk their lives at sea,” the Rev. Wes Smith said. Smith, a retired American Baptist pastor and one of the preachers at Zion Lutheran Church, which hosts the event, has played an instrumental role in coordinating it for the last few years.

The Ned Ryerson Band may borrow its name from the fictional insurance salesman in “Groundhog Day,” but nothing about the music, or the man behind it, is on repeat. On a recent night at The Mainland in Manahawkin, frontman and band creator Mike Konopka took the stage solo, balancing acoustic covers with fun banter and a natural rapport with the crowd. The performance had the laidback charm of a backyard jam session but was unmistakably polished.

Joining incumbent Barnegat Light Councilman James Gutowski on the ballot in November’s general election will be newcomer Barry Mescolotto, currently the borough’s planning board president. Tuesday, Barnegat Light voters were asked to select the only two primary candidates running so that, in November, Gutowski and Mescolotto, both Republicans, will run unopposed for the two seats coming up for election this year.
