It got plenty of attention in 2023: plans to build a large hotel-resort casino in Las Vegas’ Historic Westside at Jackson and F Street. Developer “Jackson Hotel LV” proposed the project as a way to help revitalize the struggling part of the city. It was denied. Two years later, the project goes before the Las Vegas Planning Commission again. But when the matter is discussed on May 13th, plans for “Harlem Nights” are slightly smaller.

The shopping center on the northwest corner of Sahara and Fort Apache is enormous. Its parking lot is gigantic. It’s lined with restaurants, hair dressers, a cosmetic school and the usual suburban business fare. In one of the corners there’s a hole. An entrance to nothing. The Regal Village Square 18 cinema. It closed in 2023 as theater operators across the country looked to cut costs. After all, more people are watching films at home these days. So, the theater sits empty. At least, for now.

I accidentally took one of my favorite pictures. Wandering the streets behind downtown Park City, I was seeking inspiration. In my hand, a new Sony A6700 with its kit lens. First, these shots. I snapped them as the sun was setting. I seemed to be intrigued by bridges and staircases. Then as I walked back to my car, I saw a colorful house. I also saw a woman watching the street outside. Stealthily, I captured this picture. Admittedly, I used Lightroom to brush out trash cans on the sidewalk.
