Trump administration spending cuts are disrupting work at a federal facility in Seattle. A recent ProPublica story revealed that scientists at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's Montlake Laboratory were helping clean bathrooms after their facilities’ maintenance contract wasn't renewed. Courtesy of Humanities Washington Last week, the National Endowment for the Humanities under the Trump administration canceled state grants, including for organizations in Washington. Around 80% of NEH staff members have been notified they're being laid off. The New York Times reported the NEH Advisory Council was told they would now pivot to supporting President Donald Trump's agenda, which includes a patriotic sculpture garden highlighting approved figures in U.S. history.

Rebecca Burke is a 28-year-old graphic artist from London. A recent visit she made to the States started, she said, as a trip of a lifetime, then turned into a nightmare. Burke was detained at ICE's Tacoma facility for nearly three weeks, reportedly for having the wrong visa paperwork. Journalist Jenny Kleeman wrote about what happened for The Guardian newspaper. Minimum wage increases are controversial. Most workers favor them, and many business owners don't. The Washington state minimum wage is $16.66 an hour. That's the highest state minimum in the United States. Seattle's increased to $20.76 this year, with some exceptions. Nate Sanford is a Murrow News Fellow reporting for Cascade PBS and KNKX. He looked into the pros and cons of higher wages in the Seattle area for a recent article. KUOW’s Rob Wood asked him about it.
