Interview most any vocalist, and chances are at some point they'll mention how they started singing before they could even talk. But Wilmington singer Brooke Renshaw isn't just any vocalist, so it kind of makes sense that her story is uncommon as well. Renshaw sings lead for one of Wilmington's most popular and hardest-gigging bands, Oc3ans, whose potent blend of rock, soul and hip-hop carries a coastal flair that's one of the defining sounds of the Port City.

Welcome to the weekly Port City Life newsletter brought to you by me, StarNews cultural issues reporter John Staton. As usual, there's so much going on in Wilmington that it's hard to keep track of, so I'd like to start this week's newsletter by highlighting a couple of events that almost slipped through the cracks.

We've got quite the varied lineup of events in Wilmington this weekend. In addition to the stacked lineup of concerts that we have most every week now, we've also got the return of a classical music festival, a ballet, and a chance for patrons of the public library in downtown Wilmington to say goodbye ahead of the library's expected move in August. If you're planning out past this weekend or looking for more events, don't forget to check our big ol' list of outdoor summer concerts, link below.

Perception vs. reality: It's an age-old battle, and there's not always a clear winner. For this story, we're taking an at-times tongue-in-cheek look at common myths or misconceptions when it comes to the Wilmington area. Using a mix of cold, hard facts and lived experiences from having been a lifelong Wilmingtonian, I will now attempt to combat some of these myths and misconceptions. Do I expect to change anybody's mind? Not really. But sometimes, just starting a discussion has value. Let's go.

The first job I ever had that I got an actual paycheck for was at the bygone Carolina Beach amusement facility known as Jubilee Park. It was 1986, or maybe '87, and while on summer break from high school I got paid minimum wage ($3.35 an hour, as I recall) to run the bumper cars and, sometimes, the kiddie rides. I only lasted a season, which was plenty for me.
