Welcome to the weekly Port City Life newsletter brought to you by me, StarNews cultural issues reporter John Staton. OK, so who's been to the beach already this year? I don't typically brave the ocean before May, although my teenage son was out there swimming with his friends in April. Then again, they've got young blood. This weekend isn't looking ideal for the beach, but I'm thinking that the next hot day when the temps approach 90, the surf and sand will be calling my name.

Here's an entertainment challenge for you: Go to at least one event this weekend that you normally wouldn't check out. I'm guessing you haven't seen a dance performance in a while, but you can rectify that at Thalian Hall this weekend. Likewise, there's plenty of different kinds of music out there, from folk and punk to jazz and classical. Step on out of that comfort zone and listen in on a genre you haven't heard in a while. Plenty more to see and do this weekend, so let's get started.

Welcome to the weekly Port City Life newsletter brought to you by me, StarNews cultural issues reporter John Staton. Big things can come in small packages, even tiny ones, especially when it comes to intimate Wilmington music series Tiny Caffe, held 7 p.m. the first Wednesday evening of every month at Castle Street coffee shop Luna Caffe. This month's show is May 7, and it features veteran Wilmington rapper and freestyler Fuzz Jackson, aka Fuzz Jaxx, backed by Wilmington DJ RizzyBeats.

We are very nearly to May, if you can believe that, which means it's pretty much beach season already. And while the number of arts-related events and festivals in the Wilmington area can be slightly fewer during the summer than in the spring or fall, there's still going to be plenty to choose from every weekend, particularly when it comes to concerts.

These days it's known as Mayfaire, or Mayfaire Town Center, a Wilmington shopping center where you can grab a bite, purchase some fine art and fine threads, buy a new book and a cup of coffee or even catch the latest Hollywood blockbuster. It was only a generation ago, however, that this 400-acre expanse off Military Cutoff Road would've been unrecognizable to Wilmingtonians plowing through the area's heavy traffic today.
