According to a 1994 interview in the Herald American, his brother convinced him to interview with the store, leaving Brooklyn and his pursuit of a career in law enforcement. He went to a small town in Connecticut for the interview and was turned down. Persistent, McCarthy tried again, this time at the store’s Massachusetts office.
