While much of the world watches the Vatican from afar during this historic papal conclave, a group of Maine students is experiencing it in person. Carly Philpott, a sophomore at Bates College in Lewiston, is in Rome as part of a study abroad program when the conclave to elect the next pope began. She and a dozen classmates are enrolled in a short-term course called "Layers of Rome," focused on the city's classical and medieval history.

A federal appeals court has declined to bring back Maine's 72-hour waiting period for gun purchases while a legal battle over the law continues. "Because the case presents questions of first impression in an emerging area of constitutional law involving a legal standard that is difficult to apply and subject to varying interpretations, we are not persuaded the Attorney General has made a 'strong showing' that he is likely to succeed," the panel wrote.

In a closely watched race, Maine's 2nd Congressional District is now set for a ranked-choice voting tabulation in Augusta, announced Secretary of State Shenna Bellows late Thursday night. According to state officials, initial results from the General Election indicate neither incumbent Democrat Jared Golden nor his Republican challenger Austin Theriault achieved a majority of first-choice votes, necessitating the ranked-choice process to determine the winner.
