In November 2022, city of Los Angeles voters approved Measure ULA. A hotly contested tax on real estate transactions north of $5 million, with proceeds going to address anti-homelessness efforts, it was nicknamed the “mansion tax” (though it also applies to sales of commercial and multi-family buildings). According to the official ballot summary, it was projected to generate $600 million to $1.1 billion every year. The campaign was fierce.

The new District 5 Board of Education member recognized that Trump’s campaign threat to deport undocumented immigrants was not mere bluster. “Immediately, my office started advocating for the [LAUSD] to hold Know Your Rights meetings all over the district,” said Griego, an Eagle Rock resident.
