RAVENEL — The Caw Caw Interpretive Center is getting a bit bigger. The Lowcountry Land Trust and Charleston County Parks and Recreation Commission announced May 6 that the popular park is adding 35 acres to the 654-acre preserve, an increase that will safeguard nearly half a mile of waterway. President Donald Trump has issued an executive order aimed at opening U.S. waters to deep-sea mining. Many conservatives and industry groups contend the order is meant to break America's dependency on foreign suppliers of critical minerals. Conservationists across the country worry the move could open up delicate marine ecosystems to a destructive practice. But the Southeast's waters, including the ecologically critical Blake Plateau, could be safe from the order — for the time being.
