The Federal Emergency Management Agency announced April 4 that it is ending its Building Resilient Infrastructure and Communities Program, a move that could leave several projects across South Carolina partially-completed and partially-funded. That initiative was aimed to pre-emptively prepare communities across the country for natural disasters by providing infrastructure and hazard mitigation funding to local, state and tribal governments.

That order includes the Francis Marion National Forest — but the exact scope of logging across South Carolina's federal woodlands remains unclear.

In 2023, the U.S. Supreme Court upended federal protections for America's wetlands. The 5-4 decision in Sackett v. EPA redefined a protected wetland under the Clean Water Act, stripping protections for many of the nation's marshes, lakes and streams. Environmental advocacy groups and regulators have spent nearly two years trying to understand the full scope of the decision.
