Alligators might not be into heavy metal, but heavy metal is certainly into them. A new study from the University of Georgia used gators in the Southeast as an indicator for levels of mercury found in tissues. The project could offer insight into mercury concentration in regional wetlands — findings which could prove useful, as the Trump administration has announced plans to roll back mercury emission standards for power plants.

The Trump administration is seeking to rescind the definition of "harm" as it's currently applied under the Endangered Species Act. Conservation groups worry the move could spell trouble for endangered species near Charleston and across South Carolina's rapidly developing coast.

Congressional Republicans are proposing a bill that environmental groups say could open the protected waters off America's Southeast coast to seismic surveying for oil and gas — a practice that could harm aquatic wildlife. The area currently is off-limits to resource "exploration, development or production” under a moratorium established by President Donald Trump in 2020, which took effect in 2022. That ban is set to expire in 2032.
