Growing up in San Diego, Barnes faced adversity from an early age. A 2024 graduate of the University of La Verne with a degree in Kinesiology, Barnes has risen from hardship to represent Team USA at the 2024 World Games in Romania. Barnes found refuge on the basketball court.

Jonas HoltSports EditorThe incredible Leopards’ volleyball season ended Wednesday night in the NCAA Division III Volleyball Championship Quarterfinals, where the Leopards fell in four sets to No. 1 seed and two-time defending national champions Juniata. The Leopards battled valiantly to the last point. Trailing 24-19 in the decisive fourth set, La Verne rallied off five straight points to tie the game before the Eagles ultimately sealed the victory.

The opening ceremony showcased their graduating players in a light, funny and heartfelt ceremony where they were surrounded by family and friends. Seniors Eric Bates, Peter Trinh, Sawyer Nering, David Gutierrez, Steven Rios and Alam Chang-Barnuevo were honored.

But the fare and owner may be familiar to Claremonters, as its owner, Joyce Patra, ran the former Claremont favorite 50-Fifty Asian Fusion. The Upland restaurant has a minimalist-yet-romantic feel, with exposed-stone walls. Owner and head chef Patra is clearly beloved by the customers who followed her from 50-Fifty.

The cross country teams made a strong showing at the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Championships in Brea, with both the men’s and women’s squads delivering standout performances. For the men, junior Finn McClure led the way with a 17th-place finish, clocking in at 25:46, which earned him All-SCIAC Second Team honors. His effort helped the Leopards place fifth overall, just nine points shy of a top-four finish.

There were 75 spectators at Ortmayer Stadium in support of the team and its 10 seniors for their final game of the 2024 season. The seniors made all the difference in this matchup, scoring all nine goals. Despite the final score, the Leopards came out rather flat in the first half.

This was the final game for La Verne in the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference for the 2024 season. Whittier started with the ball in the first half. They tried to play it in deep, but graduate student defender Oscar Mendoza was able to stop the deep ball and draw a foul, which led to a yellow card for Whittier in the first six seconds.
