Sumitomo Rubber Industries has agreed to repay more than $500,000 in tax breaks it received over the last two years for projects in the Town of Tonawanda. The Erie County Industrial Development Agency moved to recapture some of the benefits it had granted to Sumitomo now that the company has closed its plant and cut 1,500 jobs.

Two years after buying the closed former St. John the Evangelist Church in South Buffalo, its owners are moving forward with a multimillion-dollar plan to convert it into 24 affordable apartments. Owners Christopher and Kimberly Shores want to transform the 22,953-square-foot sandstone church at 2317 Seneca St. into a mix of studio, one-bedroom, two-bedroom and three-bedroom apartments, with below-market rental rates.

Two and a half years after winning city approval to demolish the former Amherst Bowling Center in Buffalo and build two affordable housing buildings in its place, a downstate developer now wants to construct a single large building instead. Regan Development Corp. of Ardsley was cleared in October 2022 to tear down the derelict 52,000-square-foot bowling alley at 47 E. Amherst St. and replace it with a pair of two- and four-story structures totaling 159,168 square feet.

More than a half century ago, the Buffalo Bills moved out of the city to build a stadium in Orchard Park, which has spurred little development around it and is viewed by some downtown advocates as a missed opportunity. More recently, some local officials, downtown advocates and business leaders pushed for the Bills’ new stadium to be built downtown, arguing that it would bring more activity and vitality to the city.
