Cardinals in the Vatican have selected Robert Francis Prevost as the 267th Pope of the Roman Catholic Church. Prevost, 69, who has adopted the papal name Pope Leo XIV, is the first pope from the United States. The conclave, comprising of 133 cardinal electors, reached the required two-thirds majority in just over a day, signaling their decsion with the tradional white smoke from the Sistine Chapel chimney on May 8.

A sport with origins dating back more than 900 years is generating excitement in the gymnasium at Newbridge Road Elementary School in the North Bellmore School District. Students in grades 3 to 6 have been learning the intricacies of lacrosse. Guided by physical education teachers James Breslin, the young athletes have been practicing catching, throwing and stick-handling. The first few classes focused on skills, which students then put into action through partner practice and game play.

Nassau University Medical Center recently unveiled a new, state-of-the-art mammography van outside the hospital’s main entrance, allowing hospital staff, breast cancer organizations and county officials to take a close look at the vehicle that will provide lifesaving scans to women across Nassau County. Plans for the new mobile breast cancer-screening unit were first announced in October, with hospital administrators stating that the goal was to have the van on the road by May.
