Castletown Geoghegan 1-25 Thomastown 1-14Westmeath champs Castletown Geoghegan pulled off a huge shock by defeating Thomastown in the Leinster hurling quarter final. The Kilkenny champs were red hot favourites having blitzed their way through the county championship, after winning the All-Ireland intermediate title last year but their winning run came to an end in TEG Cusack Park.

What a difference a year can make. In 2023’s WXV competition held in Dubai, Ireland faced Kazakhstan, Columbia and Spain. That gave Scott Bemand his first wins, first trophy and confidence. Once the calendar turned to 2024, the upward trajectory took a major shift. Wales, Scotland, Australia and New Zealand slayed by a big green flame. Some wins were convincing, others were nip and tuck; but confidence is one hell of a drug. That and proper resources, of course.

Another day, another victory for Emerging Ireland as they clawed over the line with a 29-24 victory over the Western Force in Bloemfontein. It was an excellent four try showing from a heavily rotated Ireland squad, beating a Super Rugby franchise with a number of internationally capped players, and will be sure to please Simon Easterby and Andy Farrell.
