WHEELING — Ohio County Schools public relations director Karin Butyn is going to Washington, D.C. this summer to share her ideas with other directors from across the nation. Butyn will be a presenter at the National School Public Relations Association conference on July 21. She has been public relations director with Ohio County Schools since early 2024, and since then it has been a busy year for her.

The West Virginia Board of Education has stripped the Tyler County Board of Education of its decision making powers, and directed State Superintendent Michele Blatt to find and hire the county’s next school superintendent. The state board met Wednesday in Charleston. “The West Virginia Board of Education has declared extraordinary circumstances exist in Tyler County Schools that warrant immediate intervention pursuant to West Virginia Code,” Blatt read from a prepared statement.

West Virginia Patrick Morrisey says he wants West Virginia’s voting laws to be as simple as possible, and for voters to know they now need to bring photo identification with them to the polls when they go to vote. “No photo ID, no vote,” Morrisey said as he conducted a ceremonial signing Thursday in Charleston of House Bill 3016. The legislation requires voters when they go to the polls to present photo identification before receiving a ballot. “This is just common sense,” he continued.

WHEELING – If you are a West Virginia resident doing your state tax return and in need of a tax credit number to claim your first-time vehicle tax rebate, that information is being mailed out now by the West Virginia Tax Division. Those MV-1 letters started to go out on Thursday, confirmed Alicia Clark, executive assistant for the West Virginia Tax Division. They should be received within the next week.

West Virginia Sen. Charles Clements, vice-chairman of the Senate Education Committee, says spending on education in the state is “upside down” and more money should be spent on its youngest learners. Clements (R-Wetzel) said he spent a lot of time last summer looking at what the education committee needs to address during this year’s legislative session that begins Feb. 12. “We have discipline problems with kindergarten-type children and not just at the high schools,” he explained.
