    The boss of Nottingham City Transport (NCT) says he wants to stay “well away” from any changes in the way the bus company operates under the new East Midlands Combined County Authority. Under some regional mayoral councils, such as in Liverpool, bus services operate under what’s known as a franchising model. These models are used because many bus services in the UK are today run under a private operator on a-for-profit basis.

    Bus passenger journeys in Notts are showing no sign of returning to pre-Covid levels as more people choose to work from home and study online long-term. David Astill, managing director of Nottingham City Transport (NCT), says the smaller number of passenger journeys by bus have reached a “new normal” following the pandemic. Between April 2018 and March 2019, before the pandemic, NCT’s buses carried 49.1m passengers, compared to 48.8m the year before.

    A charity providing supported accommodation services in Mapperley has avoided closure after the council U-turned on its decision to pull funding. Hughendon Lodge in Mapperley along with the Crescent in Hyson Green are two mental health services that had been facing imminent closure after Nottingham City Council announced plans to cut support. The services, which are operated by Framework Housing Association, offers accommodation and support for up to 52 people living with mental health problems.

    A Conservative Gedling borough councillor who sits on Nottinghamshire’s Police and Crime Panel is serving a 14-month drink-driving ban, it has been revealed. Boyd Elliott, Nottinghamshire County Councillor for the Calverton ward, and a Gedling Borough councillor, had his case heard at Nottingham Magistrates’ Court on December 17 last year.

    Plans to demolish a pub in Arnold to make way for retirement flats have been recommended for approval by planners. The Friar Tuck, in Gedling Road, is currently owned by Greene King and was originally opened in 1958. Retirement property company McCarthy and Stone had already submitted plans to demolish the pub in August last year, in favour of building a 51-bed retirement living development in its place. The pub was then closed in October.
