An iconic Big Sur restaurant has been purchased by a Monaco billionaire who has taken a keen interested in Central Coast property. Patrice Pastor's company, Esperanza Carmel, recently bought The Villages, Big Sur, according to property records. Pastor has purchased La Rambla Building, L’Auberge Carmel Hotel, the Brown-Spaulding Building and the Eastwood Building, all in the last 11 years.

Law enforcement sources told KSBW 8 that a man is in custody after a standoff on Highway 101 between Soledad and Greenfield on Friday. Salinas police told KSBW 8 that they received a call at around 6 p.m. reporting an attempted murder and stabbing of a woman. 46-year-old Oscar Villareal allegedly stabbed his ex-partner, who was also the mother of their seven-year-old daughter, and escaped before police arrived at the scene, said police. CHP later tracked down his pickup truck.

Highway 101 is closed in south Monterey County due to on-going police activity. Law enforcement sources tell KSBW 8 that the California Highway Patrol chased a suspect wanted by Salinas police. The chase led CHP officers down Highway 101 until law enforcement was able to enact a PIT maneuver and stop the car. The highway is closed near Arroyo Seco, between the cities of Soledad and Greenfield, in both directions. Law enforcement has not responded to requests for more details.

Workers at the Monterey Bay Aquarium have voted to unionize. The election began mid-March and the final tally was counted on April 21. In all, 183 employees voted to unionize and 138 voted against, approving the union with a seven percent margin. They will be part of AFSCME Council 57.

A 5.2 magnitude earthquake shook southern California, Monday morning. The earthquake, which was located 30 miles east of San Diego, was felt throughout San Diego County and Los Angeles. The NWS National Tsunami Warning Center determined that there was no tsunami expected. Could a tsunami hit San Diego? In 2010, a magnitude 8.8 earthquake in Chile, created a tsunami, and damaged millions of dollars in Shelter Island.
