Workers at the Monterey Bay Aquarium have voted to unionize. The election began mid-March and the final tally was counted on April 21. In all, 183 employees voted to unionize and 138 voted against, approving the union with a seven percent margin. They will be part of AFSCME Council 57.

A 5.2 magnitude earthquake shook southern California, Monday morning. The earthquake, which was located 30 miles east of San Diego, was felt throughout San Diego County and Los Angeles. The NWS National Tsunami Warning Center determined that there was no tsunami expected. Could a tsunami hit San Diego? In 2010, a magnitude 8.8 earthquake in Chile, created a tsunami, and damaged millions of dollars in Shelter Island.

U.S. Secretary of Agriculture Brooke Rollins issued a memo on Friday ordering the expansion of American timber production on U.S. Forest Service land, including large areas of Big Sur. The order calls for a 25% increase of timber quotas across the country's national forests. A map that was issued with the order shows large portions of California have been targeted, including the Los Padres national forest.

Two people were shot in Salinas, Friday evening. According to police, ShotSpotter caught the sound of gunfire near Acosta Plaza. A short time later, two gunshot victims arrived at Natividad Medical Center with no life-threatening wounds. Officers found the crime scene and collected evidence, but had no suspect information. Anyone with information is asked to contact Salinas police at 831-775-4222.

Three University of California, Santa Cruz students had their student visas canceled by the Trump administration. According to UCSC, starting the first week of April, the State Department began terminating the F-1 records of international students across the country. That included three students at UCSC. "The federal government has not detailed the reasons behind these terminations.
