SALT LAKE CITY β Coming off the best season in program history, Utah's beach volleyball players were called into a mandatory meeting on April 29. Many went into the meeting thinking it was a conversation about the future, especially with the team's head coach retiring just days before. Maybe there would be a conversation about the hiring process or talk about the values the players wanted to see from a new coach. Instead, the University of Utah decided to cut the program entirely.

SALT LAKE CITY β A hydration table on the sidelines of Rice-Eccles Stadium ended the football career of former Utah quarterback Cam Rising. That fact became a reality Wednesday when the two-time Pac-12 championship winning QB announced his retirement from football due to that injury he sustained in September.

SALT LAKE CITY โ After nine seasons as a sanctioned sport at the University of Utah, the university has chosen to discontinue it as a varsity sport after the academic season. Utah made beach volleyball its 20th sanctioned sport in 2017 as a member of the Pac-12, which had a thriving beach volleyball league and room to grow. But with a move to the Big 12, and only three other schools participating in the sport in the new conference, Utah didn't have much of a path to grow the sport.

DENVER — It was an improbable pick Saturday afternoon. Caleb Lohner wasn't like most — probably all? — of the other 256 players selected in this year's NFL draft. He hadn't spent years perfecting his game, hoping someday to get a shot with a team in one of the seven rounds of the draft. Instead, his chance at an NFL opportunity (especially as a drafted player) was a long shot — at best.

GREEN BAY, Wisc. — Ahead of his senior season, Caleb Lohner decided to make an unusual change. The men's basketball forward at Baylor entered his name into the transfer portal and signed with Utah ... as a tight end for Kyle Whittingham's squad. The belief was, according to Whittingham, that Lohner could make a noticeable impact on the gridiron. It turns out the switch to football paid off.
