On the outskirts of Pittsfield, workers crafting printed sheets of laminate operate vast machinery on the floor of a stark white 225,000 square-foot facility tucked into a marsh off the shores of Richmond Pond. Built in 2006, the Interprint plant employs around 200 people in Berkshire County, a rare remnant of the region’s manufacturing golden era of the mid-20th century. The company – now owned by the Japanese global printing titan Toppan Holdings Inc.

In a hard-fought race, the former city treasurer won by just a few hundred votes. Two years later, Macksey cruised to a second term. This week, the mayor pulled papers to seek a third two-year term in November.

Massachusetts State Auditor Diana DiZoglio was in Berkshire County this week. The first-term Democrat stopped at the Windsor town hall Monday afternoon to discuss a report on the Massachusetts payment-in-lieu-of-taxes — or PILOT — program. DiZoglio says data shows the system disproportionately favors the comparatively urban eastern portion of the commonwealth, leaving smaller rural communities in Western Massachusetts unfairly shorted.
