ADAMS — A slightly elevated level of formaldehyde — but not in concentrations that posed a significant health hazard — was detected in the smoke from a fire that consumed part of the former MacDermid Graphic Arts building Wednesday, according to the state Department of Fire Services. The fire, which sent smoke billowing from the former manufacturing plant into town and kept firefighters busy most of the day, remains under investigation, said Jake Wark, a spokesman for the department.

PITTSFIELD — After months of negotiations, the union representing city teachers is one step closer to reaching a contract agreement. Members of the United Educators of Pittsfield will vote on a contract proposal that their bargaining committee reached with the Pittsfield School Committee on April 29. That's according to union president Jeanne Lemmond, following a membership meeting held Tuesday and a School Committee Bargaining Subcommittee meeting held Monday.

PITTSFIELD — The city school district is looking to fill at least four key leadership positions by this summer, including two principal slots at schools undergoing significant changes and challenges. On Monday, the same day Pittsfield High School Principal Maggie Harrington-Esko announced she plans to step down, the district advertised for a principal at Herberg Middle School and reposted an opening for director of special education.
