Jersey City Mayor Steve Fulop took a figurative victory lap in his final State of the City address, touting the city’s evolution, affordable housing, single-digit homicides, Vision Zero and a plan to posthumously name a new senior center for Councilman Michael Yun. It has been 12 years since Fulop, a councilman at the time, ousted then-Mayor Jerremiah Healy to lead the state’s second-largest city. He has won three consecutive terms as mayor before deciding to run for governor this year.

Every time George Flett and Vicky Georgoulis enter their 14-story apartment senior building, it’s a toss-up — are the elevators in operation or will they be responsible for their next ailment. “The (elevators) are so dangerous …I have had friends where both elevators went down and they had to climb to the 14th floor,” Flett said about the two elevators at Boyd Mcguiness Senior Citizen Housing where he lives.

An increase in full-time freshmen and transfer students have New Jersey City University officials optimistic about the coming years, despite a 6% decline in overall enrollment. The university saw a 3% increase in full-time freshmen in September after a 23% drop last year, from 754 to 580. Meanwhile, the university’s biggest increase this fall comes via transfer students with a 28% spike. The school also witnessed a 31% jump in readmitted students, those who have been out for at least one semester.
